To measure short-term success, we administer a series of pre- and post-tests at the beginning and end of our six-week Summer Program. These tests demonstrate that most students show improvement in a range of subjects, including reading, writing and math. Long-term academic improvement is measured through a review of students’ attendance records and grades and through the anecdotal feedback of teachers, social workers, parents, and tutors from the schools our students attend.

Horizons has an established relationship with the Bush Center for Child Development and Social Policy at Yale University. The Bush Center has found that Horizons middle school students missed fewer school days and showed significantly more motivation for school. The research team commented: “This is huge—if we find nothing else in coming years, but can maintain this change, we will have succeeded by any definition of success.”
