Family Council
The Family Council’s mission is to serve as leaders within the Horizons parent/guardian community. The Family Council supports the family-program partnership, and they believe that family participation in the education process leads to students’ academic success. The Family Council encourages Horizons families to get involved in their student’s education for two major reasons:
- 1. The most consistent predictors of student’s academic achievement and social adjustment are parent/guardian expectations of the students’ academic attainment and satisfaction with their student’s education at school.
- 2. Parents/guardians of high-achieving students set higher standards for their student’s
educational activities than parents/guardians of low-achieving students.
All family members are encouraged to participate in the Horizons Family Council. The Council meets monthly to discuss various programmatic topics, as well as to identify ways they can enhance our student impact through parent engagement. Two elected Family Council representatives sit on the Horizons Board of Directors and serve as spokespeople for the family body.
Family Council Meetings are open to all Horizons family members and are held monthly on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. in the NCCS Library.
